Details

This original piece of A4 teapot artwork has been painstakingly hand embroidered and adorned with pressed flowers.  Teapot artist Leah Nikolaou knows how to match the colours of the diaphanous pressed flowers and delicate green olive branches with the earthen colours of the bird teapot.  Teamed together their beauty sings from the page.  The vase has been hand embroidered using a beautiful soft wool which compliments the refinement of the pressed flowers perfectly.

INSPIRATION

The method of displaying botanical pressings in little vases and urns takes inspiration from herbarium collections archived by the Natural History Museum in South Kensington, London.  Specifically one 17th Century Botanist called George Clifford who presented his pressed flowers, specimens from his travels in cut out paper vessels.  However the vase she based her piece on was a more contemporary twentieth century piece of pottery.  The pottery teapot was made in the shape of a bird, with details carved into the face and wings which Leah captures with her use of different embroidery stitches.

METHOD

Embroidering into paper can be precarious with no room for error so these teapot embroidery designs are carefully crafted, slowly.  The flowers are pressed using tradition flower pressing methods which take weeks, sometimes months to achieve the papery fine refinement Leah looks for.  The hand embroidery is stitched free hand, using long and short satin stitches, a feather stitch and French knots.
