Flower Vase Artwork

If you love bud vases and preserved flowers, look no further as this mixed media artwork may be for you!  Flower pressing expert and hand embroiderer Leah Nikolaou creates unique pieces using her signature mix of materials, pressed flowers and wool.

Details

This piece of mixed media artwork is A4 in size and is a one off original piece.  It’s been made with pressed classical lavandula angustifolia otherwise known as lavender in it's dried spear like form! Teamed with the most beautiful willowy pressed bluebell. Their powdery colours the perfect match for the elephant grey bud vase in this botanical embroidery.  Inspired by a vintage bud vase the juxtaposition of hand embroidery and flower pressing find harmony together.

Artwork size A4 - 210mm wide  x 297mm high

Inspiration

This method of displaying botanical pressings takes inspiration from herbarium collections archived by the Natural History Museum in South Kensington, London.  Specifically one 17th Century Botanist called George Clifford who presented his pressed flowers, specimens from his travels in little 2D paper urns and vases.  Leah decided to bring you the same concept whilst also adding embroidery to her paper vessels three centuries later!

The hand embroidery harks back to the hand-craftsmanship of 17th Century England when crafts were skilled and treasured and passed down through generations as heir looms.  Leah makes each of her pieces with longevity and a sense of value been at their core.

Method

Embroidering into paper can be precarious with no room for error so these pieces are carefully crafted, slowly.  The flowers are pressed using tradition flower pressing methods which take weeks, sometimes months to achieve the papery fine refinement Leah looks for.  The hand embroidery is stitched free hand using long and short satin stitches.

Artist

Leah Nikolaou enjoys working from her home and garden in rural Somerset where she grows many of the flowers she uses in her bud vase artwork.  Browse the entire collection of pressed flower art.
